Disney Movie Nights- Intro

I’m a HUGE Disney fan. I would say I’ve seen every movie but that’s not true at all. Did you know there are 534 Disney movies, not including Star Wars and Marvel but including Disney Channel Original Movies?! That’s a LOT of movies; I’ve seen maybe 125-150 of them. But my children have seen maybe 20, so I absolutely HAD to change that. I made a list of movies I know they haven’t seen but would enjoy, movies they’ve seen but not much, and movies they’ve seen and loved. Oh, they also had to be movies I could stand so you won’t find Sleeping Beauty (she’s only in the movie for like 20 minutes!) or the Toy Story movies (I just didn’t like them) on our list. To go with this list, I’m incorporating a snack (or dinner in the case of Lady and the Tramp) to go with each movie.

Tonight was our first night, we watched Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and our snack was Snow White’s Candy Apples. Andrew really enjoyed the movie and Adam sat still a pretty good amount, which is a good sign for him. Andrew told me after the movie that he “thought it was scary but really great!” They also loved the snacks, but it has sugar in it so that’s no surprise. I’ll post our list once I get it all figured out, I’m still working on pairing snacks with movies. Hercules was very difficult at first!

It’s That Time Of Year

I’ve written here before that my husband is in the military. Well, he is deploying in early June for a year and I’ll be home with our three boys. He left this morning for a 3 week training. I’m hoping to update this blog more as he’s deployed. I can’t find many blogs that talk about National Guard deployments and that’s what we’re going through, so if I’m able to help one person with how we got through a deployment, then it’ll be worth it.

Last night before the big boys went to bed (they’re 4 and 2), my husband and I sat them down and told them that Daddy will be going to Army for a couple weeks. They’ve begun to understand what it means when he “goes to Army” because he’s had quite a few trainings lately, preparing for deployment and everything. They gave him hugs and kisses and he told them to be good, help me, and he’ll talk to them as much as he can.

Adam had a bit of a rough night. He woke up around 11 pm and didn’t go back to sleep until 1 am, but when he woke up this morning he was in a great mood. Andrew was in a great mood also, he did so much of our morning routine by himself. Our morning routine is fairly basic. We wake up and get dressed, come to the living room and read books or play with toy cars for about 20 minutes, then take vitamins and head out the door. Their school serves breakfast and brushes their teeth afterward.

A lot of people are SHOCKED when I tell them my 4 year old has been in school for almost 3 years now. Here in Northern Panhandle, West Virginia we have early head start and head start. At our school specifically, the kids start at age 1. At other schools, they can start as early as 3 months. There are also home visitors that come visit every so often (depending on the child’s age) and observe the children to make sure they’re where they should be developmentally. It’s a really great program honestly.

My 2 year old has been in school for almost a year. Him starting school actually has a funny story. On a Monday, I got a call about an opening in the 3 year old class for my (at the time) 3 year old. I took the spot so he moved up the next day. The Friday of that week, I received another call that there was an opening in the 1 year old class and my (at the time) 1 year old was next on the waiting list. I told them I would talk to my husband and call back. Adam was my baby at the time, however I was 6 months pregnant at the time. After I talked to my husband, we decided it would be best to put Adam in school so he would hopefully adjust before our third baby came along.

Back to now, Andrew is signed up for Pre-K next year, Adam will be moving to the 2 year old room in July, and Jack’s application is in and ready for him to turn 1 in August.

I’m hoping that the big boys had great days when I go to pick them up soon.

It’s Been Almost A Year!

It’s February of a new year and my goal this year is to write on this blog a lot more than I have in the past. Ideally, I’ll do a blog a week but realistically, once a month would be awesome.

Our family grew by one in August. We’ve added another little guy into the family, leaving me as the only girl yet again. I really should get a girl dog or something. He’s almost 6 months old and is so loved by everyone. He’s a people lover and he’s starting to find his voice lately, which is wonderful to see.

I’m halfway on a low carb diet this year. I’m not being a huge stickler about it, but I’m attempting to eat less carbs. I’ve lost about 5 pounds in the last 2 weeks, which is awesome but I’ve still got quite a bit to go. When I was pregnant with #3, I gained 50 pounds, which is almost more than my older 2 combined! If I had gained 5 more pounds, my weight gain would’ve been equal to my previous 2 pregnancies. That’s just crazy to think about.

More Reading…

Last post, I wrote about Little Man starting to read sight words. Well, we’ve been using them and something else. I found a FANTASTIC website that helps teach reading, it’s called Reading Eggs and it’s proving to be amazing. Little Man has done 3 days of it and is loving it. He needs to slow down a bit because he gets a bit ahead of himself, but other than that he does great. Reading Eggs offers a 4 week free trial (with no credit card info required at sign up) and they have the Reading Eggs program, another reading program for older kids, and a math program for ages 3-8 that we’ll be trying out this afternoon. I highly recommend this website for anyone with kids!

(I didn’t receive any incentives for recommending this website, I just think it’s wonderful!)

Reading Rainbow

It’s been a while! How are you? I’m writing this post as a super excited parent of an almost 3 year old (10 more days!). How is that possible?!

Little Man has been able to recognize his letters by look for a little while now, but we didn’t really concentrate on the sounds those letters make. Within the last month or so, he picked up the letter sounds and showed me yesterday that he knew a large majority of them (he doesn’t know Q or W and only knows one sound per vowel). After talking, his dad and I decided that we should try to start teaching him to read and see how it goes. So I got on Google (Best. Invention. Ever.) and looked up a list of sight words. I found this list and took the one, two, and three letter words off of the list then saved the rest for later. My list came out to 100 words.

I then color coded the words based on difficulty and when I’d use them. The later weeks are harder things like silent e and letter combinations (th, ow, wh, etc.).

I wrote out the lists to make sure they were all equal, 10 words per week. I then realized Little Man doesn’t really recognize lowercase letters as well as he does uppercase, so I decided to write his flash cards in uppercase.

Then I made the flash cards and divided them into bags by week. We did week one today and it’s turning out GREAT. The oo sound made Little Man giggle a bit, but he’s sounding the words out and putting them together.

While I want him to stay little as long as possible, it’s so amazing seeing him learn and grow.

If you have any questions about what else I plan to do, please don’t be afraid to ask whether it be an email or a comment! I’ll update as we continue!

Life As We Know It

Life in our house has changed tremendously! We have moved into our own home and we love it. Yes, it is a big difference than what we’re used to, but we’re adjusting quite well. Little Man and Squeaky love having the extra room to move and play and I’m glad they’re able to play together.

Playing and giggling on the floor

Little Man is doing GREAT with his speech; he’s starting to put together full sentences and is able to carry on conversations and make decisions. He’s a fantastic big brother to Squeaky and includes Squeaky in everything he does…well almost everything. He still doesn’t share his cars without me asking him to. He’s adjusting to his toddler bed and his new room very well.

Squeaky is working on standing on his own, he’s up to about 10 seconds now. He’ll take steps when holding onto something or someone’s hands. He loves to play with his big brother and giggles like crazy when he gets tickled. Right now, we’re working on getting him to sleep in his own bed and he seems to be doing well. I’m thinking we’ll move him into the room with Little Man at the first of the month.

I’m going to start updating more often now that I have time and space. So I’ll see you soon! Let me know how you’ve been!

It’s SOOOO HOT!!!!!

I can NOT stand summer! It is just too darn hot. It has been in the 90’s during the day here and that is entirely too warm. I am beyond ready for fall to come around.

Little Man went back to school last Monday and he moved up to the two year old class. He is doing very well and didn’t cry when I left all week. That definitely shows that he is liking his class, in his old class he cried every day when I left. He learns more and more every day and constantly asks what things are and what things say or do.

Squeaky is crawling like crazy and pulling himself up to stand. He seems to be very advanced considering the average for crawling is 8 months and pulling self to stand at 10 months, he is 7 months old. He giggles and chatters all the time and is starting to mimic sounds when he hears them.

We have started playing Pokemon Go much like the rest of the world, which prompted us watching the series on Netflix. Now Little Man walks around pointing out Pikachu and other Pokemon everywhere we go. I’ve considered getting the graphic novels and reading them to Little Man and Squeaky.

I’ve been watching Gilmore Girls on Netflix before the revival comes back and it is a FANTASTIC show. There is something for everyone. Luke and Lorelai are by far one of my favorite TV couples.

I can’t think of anything else that is going on around here, so I’ll be off now. How are things for all of you? Let me know.
